Turning Into a Food Blog

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

I haven’t been blogging at all recently, but I am now trying to get back into it.  I think the reason I wasn’t blogging is because I was bored to death by what I was trying to write about.  Trying to consistently blog just so you can reach traffic levels is no good if there isn’t a purpose behind it.  Also, not being passionate about your subject is never a good thing.

But now I will switch this blog to be mainly about food, something which I truly love.  I still have not figured out my niche, but at least now I have a general direction.  Not only do I love eating food, but I enjoy cooking it, and would love to somehow make a business out of it. Recently my brother and I have been pondering the possibility of making our own pasta, and distributing it around San Francisco.  We ran some rough numbers, and on a general level it seemed plausable; but many specifics still have to be worked out, and we need to build a model with proper estimations to see if it is something we would be interested in.

I don’t necessarily think that selling freshly made pasta will be the right idea, but it is a start.  We could branch off into selling sauces, stocks, papusas, and many other food related ventures.  I tend to get lost with the endless possibilities, so I think sticking to this specific plan of selling pasta will be a nice way to get grounded.

The general plan we laid out was that we could create a “pasta club” that would deliver a different fresh pasta every other week.  A baseline feasability goal was that we would be able to each earn $10,000 per year.  This works out to needing to make about $850 per “pasta day”.  If delivering the pasta across the city cost $100, and materials cost $50, then we would either need 100 customers each paying $10, 50 customers each paying $20, or something in between.

My next step is to try to come up with a list of pastas for the next 6 months that would be interesting and tasty.  After that, I will try to run some more exact calculations to see if this is feasible, and then do a little “market research” by asking around and seeing what other people think of the idea or if they would ever buy in to something like this.  This blog will serve as a central communication point and also be a way for me to stay organized.
